BAY AREA GARDENING: GENERAL

The Bay Area Gardener. This extensive site started out ambitiously a few years ago, aiming to be THE major online gardening resource for the San Francisco Bay Area. It's not always up to date now, but still has many articles and much information on Bay Area nurseries and gardening events, plus a moderately active gardener-to-gardener bulletin board.

The Dirt Gardener. Plenty of localized articles, plus a nice weekend gardener's "to do" list, updated weekly.

California Garden Clubs. Links to local clubs and to other gardening sites; some articles.

Master Gardeners of California. The website for this University of California Extension program has links to the Master Gardener program in most counties. Local tips, articles, recommendations about best trees for fall color, tomato varieties, etc. for local areas.

SFGATE Home & Garden. From the San Francisco Chronicle, with articles, suggestions, current gardening events.

The Watershed Project A Richmond-based non-profit that offers gardening and environmental education workshops to the public, teachers, parents, children, homeschoolers, and anyone interested in bringing gardens and nature alive for children.

BAY AREA GARDENING: LOCAL COMMUNITIES

Berkeley Horticultural Nursery. Very useful site, with losts of gardening suggestions and recommendations for the East Bay.

Master Gardeners of Santa Clara Co.: Best Picks. Flowers, fruits, nuts, and vegetables that thrive in the South Bay. Site also has month-by-month gardening tips.

Digging Down Deep and Dirty in San Jose While Keeping Your Sanity.

GARDENING WITH CHILDREN

Kids' Regeneration Resource Network. The Rodale Institute's site for children - organic gardening and other activities are featured.

FRUITS, NUTS, & VEGGIES

California Backyard Orchard. Information from UC Davis.

Master Gardeners of Santa Clara Co. Best vegetables for the South Bay, based on results from a trial plot in Cupertino.

ROSES

Baldo's Buggy Roses. Excellent information on rose pests and their control.

East Bay Rose Society. A list of "best roses for the East Bay, along with local recommendations for fall color, apple tree varieties, potatoes, tomatoes, bamboos, fuschias, rhododendrons, raspberries.

Marin Rose Society. Check "good roses for Marin" for a list of recommended roses in all categories.

Sacramento Rose Society. Best roses for the area.

San Francisco Rose Society. Best roses for the Bay Area, calendar of year-round rose care, informaiton on rose pruning demonstrations, useful articles on the rose diseases rust and blackspot.

San Joaquin Valley Rose Society.

Santa Clara County Rose Society. Has a nice list of disease-resistant roses that do well in Silicon Valley and other parts of the Bay Area. Also information about the society's demonstration garden.

Sierra Foothills Rose Society.

Shasta Rose Society. Includes "roses for Redding."

NATIVE PLANTS

California Wildflowers. From the California Academy of Sciences, over 350 photos of native flowers with information on each.

California Native Plant Society, Milo Baker Chapter. A very welcoming site with a nice introduction to native plants and great links. And here's a link to the statewide orgaization: CNPS.

MISCELLANEOUS

Community gardening information from the Berkeley Ecology Center.

Northern California Daffodil Society. Check out "Nor Cal Growing Tips" for a useful beginner's guide to bulbs. Pretty pictures, too!
